*The Little Horsewhip* Hits Malaysian Cinemas Oct 1 — Xinjiang Boy’s Dream-Chasing Story Hopes to Reach Global Audiences

(Kuala Lumpur, 30 Sep) Xinjiang children’s film The Little Horsewhip will open in Malaysia on 1 October, with representatives from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the film’s production team visiting Malaysia to promote the movie.
Directed by Dong Xinwen and Xiaphukati Mulati, the film is set against school-based equestrian and skiing programmes in Altay, Xinjiang. It follows Kazakh boy Angsar, who dreams of becoming a skilled rider and develops a close bond with his beloved horse, “Feilaike”.
The filmmakers said the story incorporates elements of local life, including children learning to ride, participating in competitions and caring for horses. Beyond portraying equestrian sports, the film highlights cultural heritage as well as courage, responsibility, teamwork and mutual trust between humans and animals.
Filmed across all four seasons, The Little Horsewhip also showcases Xinjiang’s landscapes and local traditions. Executive producer Dilbai Abdurahman said working with young actors, horses and unpredictable weather was among the production’s biggest challenges.
One unique detail in the film sees a competition winner receiving a camel as a prize. According to the filmmakers, prizes such as camels, cattle, sheep and even motorcycles are based on real practices at some local competitions.
Despite its relatively small budget, the production team approached the project with high production standards. They hope the film will introduce more international audiences to Xinjiang’s landscapes, culture and inspiring story of a young boy pursuing his dream.
