Darren Lim Takes on Three Roles in Black and White Cleaner — Gets Too Into Eating Scene with Christopher Lee

(Kuala Lumpur, 30 Sep) Crime-action series Black & White Cleaner, starring Christopher Lee, SHOU, Karena Lam, Tou Tsung-hua and Wang Po-chieh, has topped Netflix’s rankings.

John Teng, who was nominated for Best New Performer at the Golden Horse Awards for his role as “Money” in Abang Adik, also appears in the series, taking on three identities — a former “cleaner”, an arcade owner and a tempura stall owner.

Teng admitted the role was challenging as it was his first time playing such a character and filming in Taiwan. Facing a new crew and environment, he treated himself like a newcomer and focused on learning.

Surprisingly, the tempura stall owner was the hardest role. Before filming, Teng learned how to handle and cook the food, even practising at the stall to make his movements look natural on camera.

The series also marked his first collaboration with Christopher Lee. Teng praised Lee for being friendly and easy-going. During one stall scene, the dialogue had already ended but the director did not call “Cut”, so the pair kept eating and drinking until both were completely full.

Another memorable moment came during an emotional scene with Regina Lei. While Teng had to lie still, Lei became so immersed in crying that her tears landed on his face, leaving him struggling not to laugh.

Teng described Black & White Cleaner as a valuable experience that taught him to slow down, observe more and approach his character more naturally.
